Target classification (Level 2)

A simplification of the "categorization" dataset: radar and lidar targets are shown in 9 different classes, including different types of cloud, precipitation, aerosol and insects.

Cloud fraction (Level 2)

Cloud fraction by area and volume calculated from the target categorization dataset. The corresponding cloud fraction from the various models is shown for comparison.

Ice water content (Level 2): IWC-Z-T method

Calculated from radar reflectivity factor and temperature using an empirical formula derived from the EUCREX aircraft dataset (Hogan 2003, document in preparation).

Ice water content and mean size (Level 2): Radar/Lidar method

Calculated from radar reflectivity factor and lidar backscatter (Donovan and Van Lammeren 2000, Donovan 2003).

Ice water content and mean size (Level 2): Radar/Lidar IPSL method

Calculated from radar reflectivity factor and lidar backscatter (Tinel et al. 2005, in press).

Calculated from radar/lidar derived cloud boundaries and constrained by liquid water path, if available, from dual-wavelength microwave radiometers

Calculated from Z-lwc relationships corresponding to three different classes of liquid water clouds (drizzle-free, light drizzle, heavy drizzle) diagnosed using radar and lidar
