A network of stations for the continuous evaluation of cloud and aerosol profiles in operational NWP models

The Cloudnet project aims to produce vertical profiles of cloud and aerosol properties at high temporal and spatial resolution with the following objectives:

  1. To optimise the use of existing data sets to develop and validate new cloud remote sensing synergy algorithms.
  2. To continuously evaluate the representation of clouds in climate and weather forecast models.
  3. To demonstrate the potential of an operational network to improve the representation of clouds in models.

Cloudnet is currently supported by the EU H2020 project ACTRIS (April 2015 - March 2019),
after which ACTRIS will become an EU Research Infrastructure.

History: Cloudnet originated as an EU FP5 project, which ran from 2001 - 2005, and then continued on a voluntary basis until 2011.
Cloudnet was then supported by the EU FP7 project ACTRIS (1 April 2011 - 31 March 2015).
